Living Up To.....One's Teapot
"I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china" -words uttered in 1874 by a precious and precocious undergraduate at Oxford - the young Oscar Wilde. Later raised (by himself) to high priest of Art for Art's Sake, of Decadence and of Aestheticism, Wilde was mercilessly lampooned by George du Maurier in the pages of Punch, by GIlbert and Sullivan (Patience) and even by Worcester Porcelain.
This is about China Mania -in all its crazy manifestations over the last four hundred years.
Sing along with Sullivan!
